Jack's Magazine: an Explosive History
Note: We are not taking any new registrations. This event is now oversubscribed.
A unique opportunity is on offer to walk the lush grounds and explore the imposing bluestone walls of Jack's Magazine, the former explosives storage facility on the banks of Maribyrnong River, and home to the rich histories of Victoria's gold mining, two world wars, and industrial past.
Typically $20 per head, Working Heritage is hosting two x free walking tours through the historic site this May.
Guided by the current groundskeeper, participants will be taken on a journey through the twisting tunnels, tramways, earth mounds, and buildings uncovering the history and stories of the site - one of a number of locations with significant heritage value in Maribyrnong.
As well as learning about the site's history, the tours are an opportunity for participants to share with Council officers any thoughts they may have on the heritage values, places, and cultural practices they want to see protected and celebrated for future generations, as part of the development of a new Heritage Strategy for the City.
Jack's Magazine is a heritage place on Crown Land managed for conservation and reuse by Working Heritage.
