Future proofing our reserves

The City of Maribyrnong is home to over 150 open spaces covering more than 307 hectares of land.

A notable feature of this open space network is the diversity, ranging from large historical gardens to the natural values of the waterway corridors along the Maribyrnong River and Stony Creek.

In addition, there are a number of large, high-quality sporting reserves and smaller parks and spaces interspersed throughout neighbourhoods.

To maximise the use of these large reserve spaces, Council has been developing what is known as Master Plan documents to guide future development and ensure improvements can be appropriately funded.

Why a Master Plan?

A Master Plan outlines the long-term goals, strategies, and guidelines for development. It considers the context, opportunities, and challenges of the area along with the needs and wants of residents, user groups, and stakeholders.

A Master Plan is developed with the community before it is ultimately endorsed by Council.

Detail is captured in the latter design phases before any changes or construction is undertaken.

Open engagements

Council recently endorsed new Master Plans for Shorten and Barrett Reserve and Hansen Reserve.

Engagement is now underway to support the master planning process for Robert Barrett, Dobson, and Beevers and Bell reserves.

These initial conversations aim to understand what residents like or would like to see changed.

Additionally, for Robert Barrett Reserve we're also seeking feedback on the future location of the Maribyrnong Library.

Follow the links below for more information and to share your feedback on any, or all, of these projects by midnight Sunday 30 March 2025.
