Building our Public Toilet network

Public toilets help facilitate and encourage the use of outdoor spaces. They support public health, accessibility, as well as environmental and social equity in the community.

The Maribyrnong Public Toilet Plan 2019-2029 (Public Toilet Plan), which aims to ensure the most popular parks and public spaces have an equitable and accessible provision of public toilets, outlined 10 locations for new public toilets across the City.

Since its adoption, three of the 10 toilets have been delivered, three more are currently under planning and construction, and a further four locations have been incorporated into future Master Planning processes. This includes:

  • Hansen Reserve (delivered)
  • Cruickshank Park (delivered)
  • Seddon Village at Harris Reserve (delivered)
  • Grimes Reserve/Footscray Wharf (delivery by June 2025)
  • Yarraville Gardens (delivery by June 2025)
  • Cranwell Park (delivery by December 2025)
  • Quarry Park (to be considered as part of the next Master Plan review)
  • Johnson Reserve (to be delivered as part of future upgrades)
  • Dobson Reserve (to be considered as part of the March 2025 Master Plan review)
  • Robert Barrett Reserve (to be considered as part of the March 2025 Master Plan review).

Given we now have capacity to deliver more toilets within the ten-year timeframe than originally identified in the Public Toilet Plan, we're wanting to understand other locations you'd like us to consider to install additional facilities.

We'd also like you to think about where these might include a Changing Places Facility. These are larger than a standard accessible public toilet, providing users with a disability and high support needs access to suitable, safe, and private bathroom facilities. Changing Places facilities typically include an accessible toilet (with a child's pan and change table), all-gender ambulant toilets, a shower, and a change stall.

Council's first Changing Places Facility is currently under construction at Yarraville Gardens.

How to participate

We are conducting a mid-way review of the Public Toilet Plan and are keen to understand your preferences.

You can drop a pin on the interactive map to highlight a potential location, or complete the short questionnaire to tell us where you'd like to see the next public toilet or Changing Places Facility built.

Feedback closes midnight Sunday 27 April 2025.

Negotiables

  • What we can consider

    • Locations you identify for future public toilets and/or a new Changing Places Facility.
    • Additional features you would like to see in future public toilets.
  • What we can't consider

    • The preferred standard model for any future toilets would be similar to those installed at Harris, Hansen, and McNish reserves (see images at the bottom of this page). As such It is unlikely we will consider installing new automated toilets going forward (such as those currently at Paisley St or Coulson St).
